Vole control in Western Massachusetts

Surface runways and chewed bark point to voles

Voles in Massachusetts work at ground level rather than deep underground. The damage they leave shows up as narrow paths worn through the turf, small open holes at the ends of those paths, and bark stripped from the base of shrubs and young trees.

Much of the damage happens out of sight. Snow cover lets voles feed all winter under a protective layer, so the runways and gnawed stems are often revealed all at once during the spring thaw.

Vole numbers in the region rise and fall over multi year cycles. A yard that had no issue last season can carry heavy activity the next, particularly where dense ground cover, mulch, and tall grass provide continuous shelter.

Because the two animals are constantly mixed up, it helps to review the difference between moles and voles before assuming which one is at work.

Behavior and damage patterns

How vole activity differs from other yard pests

They feed on plants

Voles eat stems, roots, bulbs, and bark. That plant based diet is why landscaping and garden losses are usually the first thing a property owner notices.

They stay near cover

Runways follow mulch beds, ground cover, stone edging, and foundation plantings. Open, closely mown lawn is crossed far less often than sheltered ground.

They are not mice in the house

Vole activity centers on the yard rather than living space. Evidence indoors more often points toward mice, which changes the inspection entirely.

An inspection-led approach

What a professional vole assessment should clarify

Vole work is landscape work. The useful questions are where the runways lead, what is being fed on, and which parts of the property give the population somewhere to live.

Answers come from walking the beds and borders rather than from a single damaged plant. Federation Pest Control checks the edges of the property as well, since neighboring fields, stone walls, and untended margins often feed activity back into a maintained yard. Recommendations then reflect the layout and planting of that specific yard.

01

Where do the runways lead?

Paths are traced from open lawn back to mulch beds, stone walls, wood piles, and ground cover where shelter and food sit close together.

02

What plants are being damaged?

Bark lines, clipped stems, and disturbed bulbs show how long activity has continued and which plantings need protection first.

03

How much cover is available?

Mulch depth, grass height, dense plantings, and stored materials all determine how much protected ground the population has to work with.

Preparation and property care

Reduce cover and protect vulnerable plantings

Leave visible runways and damaged plants as they are until the property has been inspected. Raking everything smooth first removes the pattern that shows where voles are active.

Beyond service, most of the work is landscape maintenance. Voles avoid exposed ground, so anything that opens up shelter helps.

Pull mulch back from trunks and shrub bases.
Keep grass mowed, especially along beds and fence lines.
Thin dense ground cover where runways appear.
Move wood piles and stored materials away from plantings.
Use guards around young tree trunks before winter.
Report new runways in spring so the yard can be reviewed.

Service for different properties

Where vole pressure tends to build

Home lawns and foundation beds

Mulched borders against the house give voles cover and food in one place. Shrubs and ornamental grasses near walkways often show the first bark damage.

Gardens and orchards

Vegetable beds, bulb plantings, and young fruit trees are all at risk. Losses can be significant when feeding continues through the winter months.

Commercial and managed grounds

Large planted islands, retaining walls, and landscaped buffers create long stretches of continuous cover. Mapping runways keeps maintenance focused.

Harrison is very professional young man. He fully explained what it is he was going to do where he was going to do it and went ahead and did those things. And when he was done, he went back over it and reiterated what he had done. This was the initial extermination cycle where any egress egress holes were patched, bait traps were put out, and other extermination devices. It was the preliminary to ongoing services. A good price I believe on the Service, and I will look forward to a good association with Harrison And the Federated pest control company.

I had a great experience with this company. They came to set baits and properly close down the areas to prevent mice from coming in my garage. Their prices were very reasonable, and their customer service was excellent from start to finish. They were professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain everything clearly. I truly appreciated how quickly and efficiently they handled the problem. I highly recommend them to anyone dealing with mice issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the most common vole control questions

How can I tell vole damage from mole damage?

Voles usually leave shallow surface runways, small burrow openings, clipped grass, or gnawing around plants and young trees. Moles create raised tunnels and soil mounds while searching underground for food.

Do voles enter homes?

Voles primarily live outdoors in lawns, gardens, and landscaped areas. They are different from house mice, although both are rodents, so correct identification is important before choosing a control plan.

What attracts voles to a yard?

Dense groundcover, tall grass, mulch, leaf litter, and protected areas near shrubs can give voles food and shelter. Reducing heavy cover can make the property less favorable.

How can I protect plants from vole damage?

Keep vegetation trimmed, avoid piling mulch against trunks, use appropriate guards around vulnerable young plants, and monitor for fresh runways or gnawing. A technician can recommend steps based on the activity found.
